Burger King Goes For Free-Range Animal Products…well, kinda.

Burger King is now buying 2 percent of its eggs from producers using cage-free hens and 10 percent of its pork from sources that don't use sow gestation crates.
The company expects those numbers to double at the very least by year's end, and Burger King has told egg suppliers that it will look favorably on cage-free eggs when making purchasing decisions.

Burger King will also give purchasing preference to poultry suppliers that use "controlled atmosphere stunning," which is considered the most humane way to slaughter poultry.

Although these newer, cruelty-free pork and egg products represent a tiny fraction of Burger King's fast-food output -- the company purchases 40 million pounds of eggs and 35 million pounds of pork annually. Industry experts believe this move toward more humane and healthier food will likely trigger similar moves from competitors, even though BK says it won't use these new guidelines in their advertising.

Editor's Comment
While this is a small step, it is in the right direction and may influence other fast food giants to do the same.

Cage-free chickens and pigs have more room to roam, eat entirely natural diets and grow and live free of stress. This makes an enormous difference in terms of their taste and health value to you.

I am not advocating fast food or recommending Burger King  other than to acknowledge that they have  raised the bar slightly. There is still a very long way to go to make eating fast food a healthy decision.

A Better Energy Booster Choice

Feeling a little tired? Need an afternoon pick-me-up? All you have to do is head down to the corner convenience store and slam down a Red Bull...or a Gatorade...or a cup of coffee. Or, so the ads say. But that may not be a great answer. While the short-term effects of these caffeinated beverages might make you feel more energetic (because you'll be so wired and jittery), you'll crash after an hour or two.

Did you know that a cup of coffee contains up to 550 mg of caffeine? That's the equivalent of more than six Red Bulls! And sports drinks aren't any better. While they are not loaded with caffeine, they are just glorified soft drinks loaded with sugar or artificial sweeteners. Unless you plan to go directly to the gym or intend to do some serious exercise for at least 45 minutes, you don't need this liquid sugar.

Traveling? Here’s How to Find Healthy Restaurants Anywhere

The Healthy Dining Finder is a searchable website full of information about menu items in restaurants all over the country.

  • When you type in your current location, browse through the local options. Many of those menus may be just marginally better than junk food, but at least you have some basis for making an informed decision. In addition to seeing just the restaurants menu, you will find details on grams of fat, calories, sodium and, protein content. Check it out (after you finish our newsletter of course). http://www.healthydiningfinder.com

The New Celebrex Commercial is Outrageous

Pfizer has launched a new TV commercial for its arthritis painkiller, Celebrex. There have been no Celebrex commercials for more than two years because of safety concerns about drugs in its class.

The TV commercial is two and a half minutes long, versus the typical 30 second ad.

Pfizer says the unusual length of the commercial is needed to dispel any confusion about the drug. The ad points out those other drugs, such as prescription-strength ibuprofen and naproxen, also pose risks to the stomach, intestines, and cardiovascular system.

Celebrex is a COX-2 inhibitor, the same kind of drug as the withdrawn painkiller, Vioxx.

Editor's Comment:

The Vioxx recall was one of the largest drug recalls ever. There are many other drugs being sold that could easily kill you, just like Vioxx killed 60,000 people. Now Pfizer evidently believes the dust has settled long enough for consumers to have forgotten about the heart problems associated with Celebrex. Celebrex more than doubles your risk of heart attacks, strokes, heart failure and death. Will the FDA actually pay attention to a letter sent out by Public Citizen, asking commissioner Dr. Andrew von Eschenbach to ban the ad on the grounds that it could lead patients to underestimate the many risks of Celebrex? Unfortunately, thanks to massive control by drug companies of the U.S. Congress, that’s doubtful. Just a reminder, drug ads are illegal in every country in the world, except for America and New Zealand.

Warning: GM Food Linked to Cancer

PotatoesA Russian study has confirmed a link between genetically modified (GM) potatoes and cancer in laboratory rats, according to UK Greenpeace activists. The results vindicate the research of Dr. Arpad Pusztai, whose work was questioned by industry backers.

The research was conducted in 1998 by the Institute of Nutrition of the Russian Academy, but results were suppressed until a recent victory for anti-GM activists in the Russian court system that released the findings to the public. The study showed that GM potatoes did considerable damage to the organs in the rats.

The findings have led for a call to withdraw permission to grow GM potatoes at secret sites in the UK.
