What Is Coenzyme Q-10?
Coenzyme Q-10 (CoQ10) is a vitamin-like substance that functions as an antioxidant, preventing free-radical damage at the cellular level. It is a fat-soluble substance present in every cell and serves as a coenzyme for several of the key enzymatic steps in the production of energy within the cells. It also functions as an antioxidant which is important in its clinical effects.
Coenzyme Q-10 is naturally present in small amounts in a wide variety of foods but is particularly high in organ meats such as heart, liver and kidney, as well as beef, soy oil, sardines, mackerel and peanuts.
Many who take CoQ10 notice that this nutrient greatly enhances physical energy.
Trials, Studies and World Wide Recognition
In the mid-1970's, the Japanese perfected the technology to produce pure CoQ10 in quantities sufficient for large studies and clinical trials. As a result of one study, Peter Mitchell received the Nobel Prize in 1978 for his contribution to the understanding of biological energy transfer which includes the vital role of CoQ10 in the body’s energy systems.
In the early 1980's, there was a considerable acceleration in interest in CoQ10 and in both the number and size of clinical trials. Many of these clinical studies centered on the treatment of heart disease and were remarkably consistent in their conclusions: treatment with CoQ10 significantly improved heart muscle function while producing no adverse effects or drug interactions.
In 1986, a prominent CoQ10 researcher, Professor Karl Folkers, received the Priestly Medal, and in 1990, he received the National Medal of Science from President Bush for his work with CoQ10. There are over 300 published papers about the health benefits of CoQ10.
CoEnzyme Q10 Deficiency
Over the 40-plus years of research, healthy levels of CoQ10 have been well established. It has also been discovered that low levels of CoQ10 have been noted as a possible contributing factor in a wide variety of conditions. The primary cause of CoQ10 deficiency is insufficient intake in our diets, aging, and losses in usable CoQ10 due to the commercial processing of many foods. This deficiency has been observed and associated in many advanced states of today’s most serious diseases and ailments.
Maintenance of Heart Health with CoEnzyme Q10
CoQ10 is known to be highly concentrated in heart muscle cells due to the high energy requirements of this cell type. For the past 14 years, the great bulk of clinical work with CoQ10 has focused on heart health. The majority of the clinical studies centering on the treatment of heart problems were remarkably consistent in their conclusions: that treatment with CoQ10 significantly improved heart muscle function while producing no adverse effects or drug interactions.
Why Don’t More American Know About CoQ-10?
The pharmaceutical industry does a great job at creating awareness and educating doctors and marketing their patented prescription drugs to the public. Since CoQ10 is not patentable, the drug companies have little interest educating the public or promoting a supplement they cannot control and from which they cannot profit.
Who should take CoQ10?
The highly respected Life Extension Foundation ranks CoQ10 in their top 10 anti-aging protocols. Unfortunately, most people don't get enough CoQ10 in their daily diets. It is also important to consider that research indicates natural CoQ10 production does, in fact, decrease as we get older.
Further concern is that some health conditions may compromise the body's CoQ10 supply. CoEnzyme Q10 research has shown that cholesterol lowering drugs such as Lipitor, also known as statins, may decrease the body's supply of CoQ10! So if you must take a statin you should probably supplement it with CoQ10 to ensure that your heart has enough of this beneficiary compound.
If you are over 40, it is likely that you are deficient. It may be important to supplement CoQ10 to ensure that your heart and the rest of your body have the required amounts, so you can reap the numerous benefits of CoQ10. Why risk your health? Order yours now.
