Alarming 90% Increase
in Cases of New Diabetes

diabetes on the riseThe Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently reported a shocking 90% increase in the rate of new diabetes cases among U.S. adults in the past 10 years.  Doctors say the reason for the increase in cases is likely tied to the increase of obesity in the U.S. and the sedentary lifestyle of many Americans.

Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States, according to CDC. It is also a major factor in the cause of many health problems, including heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure and kidney disease. Every year, approximately 800,000 new cases are diagnosed.

Diabetes is a group of serious diseases characterized by high blood glucose levels that result from defects in the body's ability to produce and/or use insulin. Diabetes can lead to severely debilitating or fatal complications, such as heart disease, blindness, and kidney disease.  Type 2 diabetes, which accounts for 90% to 95% of all diagnosed cases of diabetes, involves insulin resistance - the body’s inability to properly use its own insulin. Type 2 used to occur mainly in adults who were overweight and aged 40 and older. Now, as more children and adolescents in the United States become overweight and inactive, type 2 diabetes is occurring more often in young people.

For the first time, the Center for Disease Control has state-specific data on diabetes. Southern states have the highest diabetes rate. Among the 10 states with the highest diabetes rates, only Arizona is not in the South. The other nine are Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and West Virginia.  Knowing where the problems are the worst means that preventative measures can be applied that may hopefully show some positive results in time.

The best way to prevent diabetes is to exercise regularly and maintain a body weight that is appropriate for your height.  You should also make sure to eat a healthy, balanced diet.
